The Shirley Park Initiative

Why We Want to Transform the DOT Yard into Shirley Park?

The Problem:

For years, the DOT-owned yard off Sunrise Highway in Shirley has sat neglected, fenced off and forgotten. Over time, it’s become a hotspot for illegal dumping, fire hazards, and even dangerous encampments hidden in the woods behind nearby homes. Residents have called the police on multiple occasions—citing trespassing, fires, and public safety concerns. This land, while centrally located, serves no positive purpose in its current state and poses growing risks to the community that surrounds it.

The Solution:

Instead of continuing to allow this land to deteriorate and jeopardize public safety, we believe it’s time to reimagine the space. By transforming the DOT yard into a public park, we can eliminate the hazards, increase safety, and bring lasting value to the area. A park would give families a safe place to gather, kids a place to play, and residents of all ages a space to walk, relax, and connect with nature—something our town desperately needs.

The Possibility of the Park:

With the right support, Shirley Park can become a vibrant hub for recreation and community. We envision walking trails, pickleball courts, fields for sports, playgrounds, shaded seating, and even a track for exercise. It’s not just a park—it’s an opportunity for economic stimulation, job creation, community events, and healthier lifestyles. Residents could stop by on their way to shop or grab food nearby. Kids would have a safe space close to home, and the entire community would benefit from the increased green space and reduced crime in the area.

The Conclusion:

This project isn’t just about beautifying a space—it’s about reclaiming our neighborhood and investing in our future. The Shirley Park Initiative is driven by the belief that our community deserves better. By turning this underused land into something meaningful, we are creating a safer, stronger, and more connected Shirley. We invite our neighbors, local leaders, and supporters to stand with us as we bring this vision to life—one signature, one voice, and one step at a time.
